DISSONANCE, 2004 Installation for two opposite traveling video projections, amplifyer and loudspeakers
concept and realization: Judith Scherer in collaboration with: sound engineer Coralie Vincent; video camera: JoDee Samuelson;
lighting design: Paul Druet
Two parallel dance sequences, choreographed variations of a theme of gestures and movements - they are arranged around a traveling light field and a traveling shadow. Parallel an electro-acoustic composition was developed with 10 extreme high frequencies and eight extreme low frequencies to merge over a three minute time span, slowly descending and rising, to meet in one extended sinus tone in the “middle” - this movement of convergence is then mirrored in divergence - the frequencies mount and descend, the supermatket and waves run backwards. This “abstract” structure of “dissonance” is paired with a “literal” dissonance of ocean waves from Prince Edward Island and the sounds from one of its contemporary supermarkets. The composition refers to dissonance and "sonance".
This project was made possible with an award from Arts Netlantic, University of Prince Edward Island, additional support from Prince Edward Island Council for the Arts and Island Media Arts Co-operative
